There are several sexually transmitted infections or STIs contracted through unsafe sexual interaction.
Chlamydia trachomatis, an intracellular pathogenic bacterium, causes chlamydia. It often leads to urethritis in men and pelvic inflammatory disease in women.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes gonorrhea. It causes urethritis, characterized by pus discharge and painful urination in men, and causes pelvic inflammatory disease in women.
Syphilis is a bacterial STI instigated by Treponema pallidum . Interestingly, its infection can spread to all body organs, including the brain, and lead to organ degeneration.
Trichomoniasis is an STI caused by a protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It infects the vagina in women and the urethra in men, causing symptoms like itching, unusual discharge, and burning, though many remain asymptomatic.
Viral STIs include genital herpes, chiefly caused by the type II herpes simplex virus, and genital warts caused by various strains of the human papillomavirus.
HIV is a viral STI that affects the immune system. If left untreated, it can progress to AIDS and eventual death.
