Chest physiotherapy is a therapeutic technique for enhancing ventilation, removing bronchial secretions, and increasing respiratory muscle efficiency, facilitating easier mucous expectoration.
It includes the following techniques.
Postural drainage involves strategically positioning the patient to use gravity to drain secretions from specific lung segments.
Percussion is rhythmic chest tapping with cupped hands to loosen secretions.
Vibration involves tensing the hand and arm muscles while gently applying pressure with the palm on the affected area as the patient exhales.
Nursing responsibilities during chest physiotherapy include the following
Identify affected lung areas through chest X-rays and auscultation, and position the patient accordingly for 10-15 minutes for adequate postural drainage.
Maintain the position for 5 minutes during percussion and vibration.
Schedule physiotherapy at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after meals to avoid discomfort.
Lastly, avoid percussion or vibration on vulnerable areas like surgical incisions, the sternum, below the ribs, over the spine, or breasts to prevent tissue damage and discomfort.
