Diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease or IBD involves the following methods.
Colonoscopy is the primary test, allowing visualization of inflamed mucosa and biopsy for histologic examination of the colonic tissues.
Capsule endoscopy detects small bowel abnormalities.
CT scans identify bowel wall thickening, obstructions, and fistulas, while MRI detects perianal abscesses and fistulas.
Blood tests assess hemoglobin for blood loss, WBC counts for infection, and C-reactive protein for inflammation.
Stool tests check for blood and infections and aid in evaluating IBD.
Next, managing IBD includes dietary consultation. To reduce intestinal distress, a low FODMAP diet is often recommended. A FODMAP diet means consuming fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols to temporarily restrict certain sugars to reduce intestinal distress.
Probiotics help lower inflammation and restore gut microbiota.
Vitamin and mineral supplements, such as folate, iron, zinc, calcium, and vitamin D, are given based on individual needs.
