Abdominal ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging technique to visualize abdominal organs and other structures.
During the test, a gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld transducer is gently placed over the abdomen and moved back and forth.
The transducer releases high-frequency sound waves that penetrate the body, bounce off specific organs and tissues, and create echoes.
These echoes are reflected back to the transducer, which converts them into electronic signals.
A computer then processes these signals into images, revealing abnormalities in the abdominal organs.
Nursing responsibilities include the following:
Explaining the procedure, obtaining consent, and recommending fasting for 8 to 12 hours before the ultrasound.
Additionally, they advise the patient to wear a hospital gown and lie supine during the procedure.
The nurse monitors vital signs, instructs the patient to remain still while the sonographer moves the transducer, and addresses any patient discomfort.
After the procedure, the ultrasound sonographer wipes off the excess gel, answers questions and documents the findings.
