Minerals are elements that work with other nutrients to ensure healthy body function.
The human body primarily requires seven minerals — calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chloride, and magnesium — in amounts greater than 200 mg daily. Additionally, ten other minerals are needed in trace amounts.
All these minerals can be obtained from meat, seafood, dairy, vegetables, oils, grains, and cereals.
Calcium and phosphorus are the most abundant minerals, primarily occurring in the form of bone salts.
Sodium and chloride are key electrolytes, while sodium and potassium are needed for neuronal functions.
Sulfur is essential to amino acids and proteins, and magnesium is vital in ATP bioenergetics.
Other minerals, like iron, play a crucial role in the oxygen-binding heme in hemoglobin.
Small amounts of iodine are necessary for thyroid hormone production, and fluorine is needed for good dental health.
Lastly, minerals like zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, selenium, chromium, and molybdenum play several important roles as cofactors in enzymatic reactions.
