To suction the oropharyngeal airway, a nurse must first gather the necessary equipment, which includes a suction unit, suction kit, sterile gloves, saline, lubricant, and personal protective equipment or PPE.
The nurse should then assess the patient's respiratory status to determine whether suctioning is necessary.
Adjust the suction pressure to 100-120 mmHg for adults. Position the patient in a semi-Fowler's position to minimize the risk of aspiration.
Before beginning suctioning, the nurse must practice hand hygiene, don PPE [Read: P-P-E], open the sterile suction package, and connect the suction catheter to the suction tube.
Lubricate 2-3 inches of the catheter, gently insert it through the mouth, and advance it 3 to 4 inches to reach the pharynx without activating suction to prevent mucosal injury.
Suction should then be applied while slowly withdrawing the catheter using a rotatory motion to remove secretions effectively.
After suctioning, flush the catheter with saline to eliminate any remaining secretions.
Finally, the nurse must appropriately discard the gloves and catheter and document the procedure.
