For instance, a longitudinal study on breast cancer follows patients from diagnosis through treatment, noting survival and quality of life to guide medical practices.
Their benefits over cross-sectional studies include minimizing cohort effect by tracking individual changes and discerning genuine predictors of future outcomes.
Longitudinal studies also have limitations, such as high costs and selective attrition caused by participant dropout due to moving away, illness, or lack of motivation.
