Light enters the eye through the cornea, a thin transparent layer that refracts light to help focus it as it enters the eye, directing the light towards the pupil, a central hole that allows light to pass through. The iris is the colored part of the eye that regulates the pupil, which controls the amount of light entering the eye.
The light then passes through the lens to reach the retina, which contains the photoreceptor rods and cones. Here, the light energy is converted into electrical signals and transmitted to bipolar cells, which relay the information to ganglion cells.
The axons of the ganglion cells merge to form the optic nerve, which transmits these signals to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe of the brain.
In the visual cortex, neurons interpret signals to perceive basic visual features.
Feature detectors are specialized neurons in the brain's visual system that respond to specific features of a stimulus, such as edges, shapes, colors, and motion.
Parallel processing enables the simultaneous handling of various visual elements such as color, shape, and motion.
Information from different neural pathways or cells is integrated by a process called binding, creating a cohesive visual perception.
