Parallel processing allows the brain to manage various sensory qualities, such as shapes, colors, movements, and depth, simultaneously. The information is distributed across different neural pathways at the same time.
For example, when observing a forest landscape, the brain simultaneously processes the movement of leaves, the shapes of trees, and the various shades of green, enabling quick and accurate perception of the entire scene.
Similarly, recognizing a face involves integrating information from the retinas into various areas of the visual cortex. The brain compares this data with stored information, enabling the face recognition area to identify an individual.
Studies show that the visual system has two parallel streams. The first stream acts as an early warning system, providing spatial and movement information. It helps detect fast-approaching objects, like a car, from the periphery while walking on a sidewalk.
The second stream handles detailed processing in the visual field's center, identifying and analyzing objects based on input from the global mechanism, which processes first.
