Behavior modification is a method used to change someone's behavior through a system of rewards and punishments.
It uses operant conditioning to change behavior in various settings, including the workplace, home, and educational institutions.
Behavior modification identifies rewards that maintain unwanted behaviors and enhances rewards for appropriate behaviors, viewing all human behavior as influenced by rewards and punishments. For example, a manager who rewards staff with a half day off for meeting a particular goal uses behavior modification principles.
Likewise, parents set clear behavior consequences to reinforce adaptive actions and discourage maladaptive ones, such as praising children for completing homework on time and reducing screen time if chores are consistently neglected.
Similarly, teachers can use behavior modification techniques by ignoring students' attention-seeking behavior rather than scolding them, which eventually changes the students' troublesome behavior.
Behavior modification combines incentives like government or community rewards for recycling with the internal satisfaction of contributing to a cleaner environment
