Phobias such as darkness, heights, deep water, and blood are common among people and often occur without any prior frightening experiences.
Evolution predisposes humans to associate certain stimuli, such as venomous snakes and spiders, with fear due to their survival value, known as preparedness.
But, it can lead to the development of illusory correlations, where people believe there is a link between a fear-provoking stimulus and negative consequences, even if none exists.
For instance, people with acrophobia or fear of heights don't always have more negative experiences with heights compared to those without the phobia.
Some individuals are genetically predisposed to develop phobias through classical conditioning, even with minimal or no negative encounters with the feared stimulus.
For instance, someone genetically prone to anxiety might develop a fear of elevators after hearing about someone getting stuck in one, even without having a negative experience.
