Memory is categorized into three major systems: sensory memory, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM).
These systems differ in their capacity and the duration up to which they can hold information.
Sensory memory captures raw sensory input from the environment, such as the brief impression of a scene glimpsed when a moving car passes by quickly, and holds this sensory input for just a few seconds or less.
Secondly, STM actively processes the information received from sensory memory. For instance, if someone gives directions to a nearby location, the directions are remembered just long enough to reach the destination.
STM transforms the information into more meaningful content, such as converting visual patterns into recognizable shapes.
Lastly, LTM stores important information for extended periods, ranging from minutes to a lifetime. For example, if one travels to the same place multiple times, the route may eventually be stored in long-term memory.
LTM is capable of retaining vast amounts of information, such as personal experiences, knowledge, and skills.
Het geheugen wordt onderverdeeld in drie hoofdsystemen: sensorisch geheugen, kortetermijngeheugen (KTM) en langetermijngeheugen (LTM). Deze systemen v…
