Cochran's Q test is used when the same individuals in the data are tested repeatedly for the presence or absence of an attribute.
For example, 24 saplings of a plant species are tested for floral growth affected by a phytophagous insect pest.
In the experiment, these saplings are deprived of a spider species that could eradicate the pest. The saplings are observed for four months to understand the effect.
Now, for each month, score one is assigned to the saplings having intact floral buds, and score 0 if no floral buds are seen.
The test statistic Q is calculated using the following equation.
Here, a = 4 — the number of months observed, and b = 24 — the number of saplings. The other quantities in the equation are also calculated.
Cochran's Q approximates the chi-square distribution. Here, it is compared with a-1 = 3 degrees of freedom.
At a 0.05 significance level, it suggests rejecting the null hypothesis.
