Did you know the continents fit together like puzzle pieces? In 1912, German scientist Alfred Wegener proposed the Continental Drift Hypothesis in his book, The Origin of Continents and Oceans.
He observed that mountain ranges and coal fields on different continents aligned when the continents were pieced together.
He suggested that continents were once part of a supercontinent called Pangaea, which means all the Earth. Over millions of years, they drifted to their current positions.
Fossils of the same plants and animals, like the extinct reptile Mesosaurus, were found on continents now separated by oceans, including South America and Africa, suggesting they were once connected.
He also found climate clues, like scratches from glaciers in now-tropical areas and fossils of plants in Antarctica, a polar region, that could only have lived in warmer climates.
Despite strong evidence, scientists rejected his idea since he couldn't explain how continents moved through solid ocean floors, and his comparison to an icebreaker cutting through ice was unconvincing.
Wegener passed away in 1930. Years later, new technology confirmed that continents do move.
