Self-awareness arises when individuals focus their attention on themselves, evaluating their appearance, behavior, and thoughts.
Situations like seeing oneself in a mirror or video, hearing one’s voice, feeling pain, or reacting emotionally to others can trigger self-awareness by turning attention inward.
Unfamiliar or socially awkward situations, such as speaking in a language in which an individual is not fluent, also induce self-awareness by disrupting the natural flow of actions and interactions.
These moments prompt individuals to self-monitor and adjust their actions to fit the situation.
High self-awareness increases the likelihood of honest behavior and greater attention to how one's actions align with both personal and social standards.
Highly self-aware individuals regulate their behavior with greater conscious self-control.
Conversely, low self-awareness results in behavior that is more automatic and habitual.
Self-awareness is a key part of being able to control or change behavior. For example, realizing that someone tends to interrupt others while speaking can help them listen more and wait for their turn.
