A hemorrhagic stroke develops when a weakened blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding into surrounding brain tissue.
This bleeding forms a focal hematoma and may lead to further complications like intraventricular hemorrhage, brain swelling, or compression of nearby structures.
Hemorrhagic stroke is classified into two main types: intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Intracerebral hemorrhage happens when a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds directly into the brain parenchyma.
It is most often caused by chronic hypertension or age-related weakening of blood vessels due to cerebral amyloid angiopathy.
Less commonly, it may result from an arteriovenous malformation, a tangled cluster of abnormal blood vessels. If one ruptures, it can cause bleeding within the brain.
A subarachnoid hemorrhage happens when blood leaks into the space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater.
It is commonly caused by the rupture of a berry aneurysm, which is a balloon-like bulge in a blood vessel, or head trauma.
