Sociaal-contextuele benadering

The social-contextual approach is based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory.

It explains cognitive development by looking at cultural and environmental influences, especially the role of parents and other caregivers.

For example, in individualistic cultures, parents practice sleeping separately from the infants to encourage the child's independence.

But in collectivistic cultures, parents often share a bed with their infants to promote family closeness.

Likewise, cultural context also shapes how children learn about their world.

For instance, children may learn through formal education, guided participation, or both, depending on their family, community, and culture.

Guided participation happens when adults support and organize children’s activities. This helps connect children’s current understanding with an adult’s knowledge.

It often takes place during shared play and daily routines. During these activities, children informally gain the skills, knowledge, and values that are important in their culture.

Although learning experiences differ, all children develop the skills they need to take part in their communities.
