Antioxidant Scavenging

Antioxidant scavenging is the chemical process by which antioxidants neutralize reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, limiting molecular damage caused by oxidative stress. These molecules typically donate an electron or hydrogen atom to unstable radicals, converting them into less reactive products while forming relatively stable antioxidant-derived species; enzymes can also catalyze related reactions. In bioengineering, antioxidant scavenging supports the design of biomaterials, drug-delivery systems, and engineered tissues that reduce oxidative damage at implant or injury sites. Measuring scavenging activity helps evaluate material biocompatibility, protect cells during culture, and guide strategies for controlling inflammation, degradation, and tissue regeneration.

Comparative Study on the Polysaccharide Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae gyantsensis

2025

This study compared the polysaccharide contents of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis Rousi and Hippophae gyantsensis (Rousi) Y. S. Lian obtained through hot water extraction and quantified through phenol-sulfuric acid colorimetry. We also investigated in vitro antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from these two Hippophae species through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging experiments.
