Biaxial Mechanical Tests

Biaxial mechanical tests are experimental methods that measure how a material responds to forces applied along two perpendicular directions, making them important for characterizing materials with direction-dependent behavior. In bioengineering, a specimen is stretched or loaded simultaneously along two axes while force and deformation are recorded to generate stress-strain data under controlled loading ratios and boundary conditions. These measurements reveal mechanical anisotropy, elasticity, strength, and interactions between orthogonal loading directions that uniaxial tests may miss. Results support the design and evaluation of tissue-engineered constructs, biomaterials, implants, and computational models intended to reproduce the mechanical behavior of biological tissues.
