Chronic Fontan Model

The Chronic Fontan Model is a long-term experimental representation of Fontan circulation, a palliative physiology in which systemic venous blood reaches the lungs without a dedicated pumping ventricle. It is created by establishing a cavopulmonary connection that directs venous return to the pulmonary arteries, making pulmonary blood flow largely passive and dependent on venous pressure, low pulmonary vascular resistance, and respiratory pressure changes. In bioengineering, this model enables investigation of altered hemodynamics, venous and lymphatic dysfunction, exercise limitations, and progressive organ effects associated with Fontan physiology. It also supports evaluation of computational models, medical devices, and tissue-engineered strategies intended to improve circulation.

Here, we describe a new approach to inflict closed-head traumatic brain injury in Drosophila melanogaster. Our method has the advantage of directly delivering repetitive impacts with adjustable strength to the head alone. Further exploration of the invertebrate system will help to illuminate the pathogenesis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
