Faims

FAIMS, or field asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry, is a gas-phase separation technique that distinguishes ions according to how their mobility changes in strong and weak electric fields. An asymmetric waveform alternates between high and low field strengths as ions travel through a carrier gas, while a compensation voltage selectively transmits ions with particular differential mobility; the separated ions can then enter a mass spectrometer for detection. In chemistry, FAIMS improves ion identification, reduces spectral overlap, and supports analysis of complex mixtures, including pharmaceuticals, metabolites, proteins, and reaction products. Its rapid, orthogonal separation provides an effective complement to liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.
