Hydrogen Isotopes

Hydrogen isotopes are atoms of hydrogen that contain one proton but differ in neutron number, giving them distinct masses and, in the case of tritium, radioactive behavior. The three commonly studied isotopes are protium, deuterium, and tritium; their shared electron configuration produces similar bonding and chemical reactions, while mass differences alter reaction rates, vibrational frequencies, and equilibrium through isotope effects. In chemistry, these properties support isotopic labeling and tracing of reaction pathways, the use of deuterated solvents and compounds in spectroscopy, and radiolabeled studies with tritium. Hydrogen isotopes also contribute to research on biological processes, environmental systems, and nuclear energy.

A chemical symbol is an abbreviation used to indicate an element or an atom of an element. For example, the symbol for mercury is Hg. The same symbol is used to indicate one atom of mercury (microscopic domain) or to label a container of many atoms of the element mercury (macroscopic domain). Some symbols are derived from the common English name of the element; others are abbreviations of the name in another language — Latin, Greek or German. For example, the symbol for aluminum (common name)...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the hydrogenation of chalcone as an example of an alkene hydrogenation reaction (Figure 1). In this experiment, palladium on carbon (Pd/C) will be used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the process. A balloon will be used to supply the hydrogen atmosphere. Previous work suggests that the nitrogen isotopic composition of atmospheric nitrogen oxides might distinguish the influence of different sources in the environment. We report on an automated, mobile, field-based method for the high collection efficiency of atmospheric NOx for N isotopic analysis at an hourly time resolution.

Elements have a set number of protons that determines their atomic number (Z). For example, all atoms with eight protons are oxygen; however, the number of neutrons can vary for atoms of the same element. The sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons is the mass number (A). Atoms with the same atomic number but different mass numbers are called isotopes. Elements can have multiple isotopes, for example, carbon-12, carbon-13, and carbon-14.An element's atomic mass, or weight, is a...
