Non-stirred Precipitation Polymerization

Non-stirred precipitation polymerization is a polymer synthesis technique in which polymer particles form and separate from a reaction medium without mechanical agitation. Typically, soluble monomers and an initiator are heated in a solvent; as polymer chains grow through free-radical polymerization, they become insoluble, precipitate, and develop into particulate material under otherwise quiescent conditions. This approach can produce polymer beads or structured particles while reducing the equipment and shear associated with stirred reactors. In chemistry, it supports the preparation of functional polymer materials and provides a useful system for studying nucleation, particle growth, solvent effects, and how reaction conditions influence particle size and morphology.

Separation of Mixtures via Precipitation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ana J. García-Sáez — University of Tübingen Most samples of interest are mixtures of many different components. Sample preparation, a key step in the analytical process, removes interferences that may affect the analysis. As such, developing separation techniques is an important endeavor not just in academia, but also in industry. One way to separate mixtures is to use their solubility properties. In this short paper, we will deal with aqueous solutions. The...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Polymers are made from macromolecules, which are composed of repeating units (the so called monomeric units). In our modern world, polymers play an important role. One of the first important polymers was nylon, which is a polyamide. It found widespread application in tooth brushes and stockings.

Precipitation and Co-precipitation

Precipitation and coprecipitation methods can be used to separate a mixture of ions in a solution. In qualitative inorganic analysis, ions that form sparingly soluble precipitates with the same reagent are separated based on the differences in solubility products. For example, consider the separation of Cu(II) and Fe(II) ions by precipitation as insoluble sulfides. First, copper(II) sulfide is precipitated by the addition of acidic H2S, where the dissociation of H2S is suppressed. Adding H2S...

Predicting Precipitation The equation that describes the equilibrium between solid calcium carbonate and its solvated ions is: It is important to realize that this equilibrium is established in any aqueous solution containing Ca2+ and CO32– ions, not just in a solution formed by saturating water with calcium carbonate. Consider, for example, mixing aqueous solutions of the soluble compounds sodium carbonate and calcium nitrate. If the concentrations of calcium and carbonate ions in the mixture...
