Stirring Hotplate

A stirring hotplate is a laboratory instrument that simultaneously heats and mixes liquid samples, providing controlled temperature and uniform composition during chemical procedures. An electrically heated surface transfers thermal energy to a vessel, while a rotating magnetic field drives a magnetic stir bar through the liquid; users adjust heating and stirring rates to control reaction conditions. In chemistry, stirring hotplates support dissolution, solution preparation, crystallization, reflux, and synthesis by reducing temperature gradients and improving contact between reactants. Their combined heating and agitation capabilities promote reproducible experiments, although operators must select suitable vessels, stir bars, and temperature settings for safe and effective use.

The power input in stirred bioreactors can be measured through the torque that acts on the impeller shaft during rotation. This manuscript describes how an air bearing can be used to effectively reduce friction losses observed in mechanical seals and improve the accuracy of power input measurements in small-scale vessels.

Source: Lara Al Hariri and Ahmed Basabrain at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA, USA Determining the Melting Points of Naphthalene, Urea, and an Unknown MixtureExpand In this experiment, you will measure the melting point range of two known substances, naphthalene and urea, by observing the melting phenomenon during heating. You'll then analyze a mixture of urea and an unknown substance to observe how the unknown impurity affects the melting point range. Put on a lab coat,...
