Temperature Programming

Temperature programming is a chemical method that changes temperature according to a defined schedule rather than holding a sample at a constant temperature. In gas chromatography, an oven ramp progressively increases analyte volatility, reducing retention of less volatile compounds and helping separate components across a broad boiling-point range. The ramp rate, starting temperature, final temperature, and hold times influence peak spacing, analysis time, and resolution. Temperature programming is therefore important for analyzing complex mixtures, while related schedules can control reaction rates, thermal transitions, and decomposition in other chemical experiments.
