Ostomy Pouch Change

Ostomy pouch change is a clinical procedure for removing and replacing the collection system attached to a surgically created stoma, helping manage intestinal or urinary output outside the body. The process involves gently loosening the used pouch, inspecting the stoma and peristomal skin, cleansing and drying the area, sizing the skin-barrier opening, and securing a new pouch to create a close, comfortable seal. Proper technique supports effective containment, reduces leakage and skin irritation, and promotes patient independence in daily care. Training in pouch changes is important for nurses, patients, and caregivers across postoperative, rehabilitation, and long-term clinical settings.

Introduction An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from the intestines to the outside of the body, allowing for the rerouting of effluent. This opening is known as a stoma. A stoma usually protrudes above the skin surface, appearing pink or red, moist, and round, and it lacks nerve sensations. There are different types of ostomies, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies: A colostomy involves bringing a part or section of the colon, or large...

Source: Wanderer, S., et al. Arterial Pouch Microsurgical Bifurcation Aneurysm Model in the Rabbit. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the creation of an experimental aneurysm model in a rabbit using an elastase-treated vessel pouch. After excising a segment of the right CCA, the pouch is treated with elastase, then sutured to the left CCA to restore blood flow. The resulting stress on the weakened pouch walls induces aneurysm formation.

An optimized technique for the microsurgical creation of arterial bifurcation aneurysms mimicking bifurcation human cerebral aneurysms is described. A venous pouch is sutured into an artificially created true bifurcation of both common carotid arteries. Facilitated microsurgical techniques and aggressive postoperative anticoagulation and analgesia lead to minimized morbidity rates and high aneurysm patency rates.

Melting Land and Sea Ice ExpandNOTE: This activity is a simulation of land- and sea-ice melting and their effects on water levels. First, label one graduated cylinder as 'Sea Ice' and the other graduated cylinder as 'Land Ice.' Hypotheses: the experimental hypothesis might be that the land ice melting will cause the water level to rise more than the melting sea ice. The null hypothesis would be that there will be no difference in the change in water level between the two containers. Add 10 ice...
