Pseudoaneurysm

A pseudoaneurysm is a contained arterial wall injury in which blood escapes through a defect and forms a pulsatile sac within surrounding tissue, making it clinically important because expansion or rupture can cause serious bleeding. Unlike a true aneurysm, the sac lacks the artery’s complete wall layers; ongoing arterial pressure drives flow through the neck, often producing turbulent circulation detectable with Doppler ultrasonography. In clinical practice, pseudoaneurysms may follow catheter-based procedures, trauma, or surgery, and imaging helps distinguish them from other vascular lesions and guide treatment, including ultrasound-guided compression, thrombin injection, endovascular repair, or surgery.
