Cylindrical Lens Focusing

Cylindrical lens focusing is an optical process that concentrates light in one dimension, producing a line focus rather than the point focus formed by a spherical lens. A cylindrical lens has curvature along only one axis, so it changes the convergence or divergence of rays in that direction while leaving the perpendicular axis largely unaffected; the focal distance depends on lens curvature, refractive index, and illumination conditions. In engineering, this behavior supports laser beam shaping, line generation, optical scanning, and correction of astigmatism. Careful alignment and control of beam quality help produce uniform focal lines for imaging, inspection, measurement, and materials processing.

Polar and Cylindrical Coordinates

2025

The Cartesian coordinate system is a very convenient tool to use when describing the displacements and velocities of objects and the forces acting on them. However, it becomes cumbersome when we need to describe the rotation of objects. So, when describing rotation, the polar coordinate system is generally used. In the polar coordinate system, as shown in the above figure, the location of a point in a plane is given by two polar coordinates. The first polar coordinate is the radial coordinate,...

Spherical and Cylindrical Capacitor

A spherical capacitor consists of two concentric conducting spherical shells of radii R1 (inner shell) and R2 (outer shell). The shells have equal and opposite charges of +Q and −Q, respectively. For an isolated conducting spherical capacitor, the radius of the outer shell can be considered to be infinite. Conventionally, considering the symmetry, the electric field between the concentric shells of a spherical capacitor is directed radially outward. The magnitude of the field, calculated by...

Inductance: Solid Cylindrical Conductor

2024

To calculate the inductance of a solid cylindrical conductor, consider a 1-meter section of a non-magnetic, current-carrying conductor with radius r. Disregarding end effects and assuming uniform current density, Ampere's law helps determine the magnetic field inside the conductor. This law states that the magnetic field intensity H is concentric and constant within the conductor. Given the uniform current distribution, the magnetic field Hx and flux density Bx inside the conductor are...
