Distributed Temperature Sensor

A Distributed Temperature Sensor (DTS) is a measurement system that determines temperature continuously along the length of an optical fiber, providing a spatial profile rather than readings from separate point sensors. It works by sending laser pulses through the fiber and analyzing temperature-dependent Raman backscattered light, with the return time indicating the location of each measurement. In engineering, DTS supports real-time monitoring of power cables, pipelines, tunnels, wells, and industrial equipment, where localized heating can signal faults or changing operating conditions. Its continuous coverage, long sensing range, and resistance to electromagnetic interference make it valuable for safety, asset management, and infrastructure diagnostics.

We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as thermocouples.

Accurately measuring temperature and water content of the upper 5 mm of the soil surface can improve our understanding of environmental controls on biological, chemical, and physical processes. Here we describe a protocol for manufacturing, calibrating, and conducting measurements with soil surface temperature and moisture sensors.

With the advent of small, low-cost environmental sensors, it is now possible to deploy high-density networks of sensors to measure hyper localized temperature variation. Here, we provide a detailed methodology for constructing a compact version of a previously described custom-fabricated radiation shield for use with inexpensive thermochrons.
