Folding Shifting

Folding shifting is an engineering approach in which a structure changes its shape by rotating connected elements and translating them relative to one another. Hinges, compliant joints, sliding interfaces, or programmed crease patterns coordinate these movements, allowing a compact configuration to transform into a functional geometry while managing motion and load transfer. Engineers apply folding shifting principles to deployable structures, reconfigurable mechanisms, adaptive products, and space-efficient systems. Studying this topic supports the design of lightweight devices that can be stored compactly, deployed reliably, and adjusted for changing operating conditions without relying on complex assembly.

Molecular Chaperones and Protein Folding

2020

The native conformation of a protein is formed by interactions between the side chains of its constituent amino acids. When the amino acids cannot form these interactions, the protein cannot fold by itself and needs chaperones. Notably, chaperones do not relay any additional information required for the folding of polypeptides; the native conformation of a protein is determined solely by its amino acid sequence. Chaperones catalyze protein folding without being a part of the folded protein. The...

Proteins are chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Upon synthesis, a protein folds into a three-dimensional conformation which is critical to its biological function. Interactions between its constituent amino acids guide protein folding, and hence the protein structure is primarily dependent on its amino acid sequence.Protein Structure Is Critical to Its Biological FunctionProteins perform a wide range of biological functions such as catalyzing chemical reactions, providing...

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...
