Force Interaction Balancing

Force interaction balancing is the engineering practice of arranging applied forces and reactions so their combined effect produces the desired state of equilibrium, motion, or load transfer. Engineers represent each force as a vector and evaluate the resultant force and, for rigid bodies, the resultant moment; static balance requires both sums to equal zero, while dynamic designs account for acceleration and changing loads. This analysis helps determine support reactions, member sizes, contact conditions, and safety margins in structures, machines, and mechanical assemblies. By balancing interacting forces, engineers can limit deformation, prevent unwanted motion or failure, and improve system reliability under complex operating conditions.

2025

In this video, biomembrane force probes (BFPs) are used to measure the forces between receptors and ligands. This technique can detect interactions by monitoring the pressure needed to break the bonds between the pMHC conjugated on the probe beads and the TCRs on the target cells.

Balancing Redox Equations

2020

Electrochemistry is the science involved in the interconversion of electrical and chemical reactions. Such reactions are called reduction-oxidation, or redox reactions. These important reactions are defined by changes in oxidation states for one or more reactant elements and include a subset of reactions involving the transfer of electrons between reactant species. Electrochemistry as a field has evolved to yield sufficient insights on the fundamental principles of redox chemistry and multiple...

Deficits in fine motor coordination can be assessed with the balance beam test. Performance on the beam is quantified by the speed at which the beam is traversed and the number of times the mouse slips on the beam.

Balance and Coordination Testing

Balance and coordination are critical components involved in the control of movement. Many sensory receptors and neural processing units are required to help individuals maintain balance while performing various activities. Deficits in balance and coordination occur in patients suffering from movement disorders or due to aging. Therefore, scientists are trying to understand the pathophysiology behind these conditions. One way to do that is by using rodent models and testing them on behavioral...
