Hierarchical Structures

Hierarchical structures are systems organized into nested levels, in which smaller components combine into larger units with distinct functions and properties. In engineering, this organization works by distributing geometry, materials, or control across scales, allowing each level to transfer loads, constrain motion, or coordinate behavior while interacting with adjacent levels. Engineers use hierarchical structures in mechanical components, architectural frameworks, engineered materials, and complex systems to improve strength, efficiency, adaptability, and reliability. Studying these structures helps researchers connect local design decisions with overall performance and develop solutions that function effectively across multiple length or organizational scales.

2023

Nanoporous gold with a hierarchical and bimodal pore size distribution can be produced by combining electrochemical and chemical dealloying. The composition of the alloy can be monitored via EDS-SEM examination as the dealloying process advances. The material's loading capacity can be determined by studying protein adsorption onto the material.
