Impact Toughness Testing

Impact toughness testing is a mechanical method for measuring how well a material absorbs energy and resists sudden fracture under dynamic loading. In a typical Charpy or Izod test, a pendulum strikes a notched specimen, and the loss in the pendulum’s energy indicates the energy absorbed as the crack initiates and propagates. Results depend on material composition, temperature, specimen geometry, and loading conditions, so standardized procedures enable meaningful comparisons. Engineers use impact toughness data to select materials, evaluate heat treatments and welds, identify brittle-fracture risks, and improve the safety and reliability of structures, vehicles, pipelines, and machine components.

Toughness and Hardness of Aggregate

2024

Toughness and hardness are critical properties of aggregate materials used in concrete, particularly on pavement surfaces and industrial flooring subjected to heavy loads. Toughness is defined as the aggregate's resistance to failure by impact and is measured by the aggregate impact value (AIV). For this, the aggregate impact value test is performed, wherein the impact is delivered by a standard hammer, which falls freely under its own weight onto the aggregates. The aggregates fragment in the...

Charpy Impact Test of Cold Formed and Hot Rolled Steels Under Diverse Temperature Conditions

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA One of the more insidious types of failures that can occur in structures are brittle fractures, which are mostly due to either poor quality materials or poor material selection. Brittle fractures tend to occur suddenly and without much material inelasticity; think of a bone fracture, for example. These failures often occur in situations where there is little ability for the material to develop...

Here, we present a protocol designed to show how negative aging stereotypes can impair memory performance of older adults during cognitive testing and how to reduce this deleterious effect. This method can help older people to perform at an optimal level during testing in both lab studies and clinical settings.

Impact of Groups on Groups

Social psychologists analyze how groups influence one another, shaping social structures and interactions through both cooperation and competition. These dynamics manifest in various ways, ranging from economic partnerships to intergroup conflicts that shape societal structures and perceptions.Cooperation and Competition in Intergroup RelationsIntergroup relationships vary across contexts, sometimes fostering cooperation and mutual benefit while at other times leading to conflict and...
