Strand Casting

Strand casting is a continuous metal-forming process that converts molten metal into solid sections, such as slabs, blooms, or billets, for subsequent manufacturing. Molten metal enters a water-cooled mold, where a solid shell forms around the liquid core; withdrawal rolls then pull the partially solidified strand through secondary cooling zones until solidification is complete, after which it is cut to length. Widely used in steel, aluminum, and other metal production, strand casting improves productivity, dimensional consistency, and material yield compared with separate ingot casting. Control of temperature, flow, cooling rate, and casting speed helps prevent defects and supports reliable downstream rolling or forging.

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...

We describe an efficient method to separate single-stranded DNA, double-stranded DNA and RNA molecules from environmental viral communities. Nucleic acids are fractionated using hydroxyapatite chromatography with increasing concentrations of phosphate-containing buffers. This method permits the isolation of all viral nucleic acid types from environmental samples.
