Image Annotation

Image annotation is the process of adding structured labels to photographs, satellite scenes, or other visual data so that objects, regions, and environmental features can be identified consistently. Annotators mark examples with tools such as bounding boxes, polygons, points, or pixel-level masks, creating labeled datasets that machine-learning systems use to learn visual patterns and evaluate predictions. In environmental science, annotated imagery supports land-cover mapping, habitat and species monitoring, crop and forest assessment, and detection of changes such as deforestation or water pollution, improving the speed, scale, and reproducibility of spatial analysis.

Genome Annotation and Assembly

2021

The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.
