Debt Instruments

Debt instruments are financial contracts through which one party borrows funds and agrees to repay the principal, usually with interest, under specified terms. They include bonds, loans, notes, and bills, and define key features such as maturity date, interest rate, payment schedule, collateral, and the issuer’s obligations to creditors. Investors use these instruments to generate income and assess credit risk, while governments, companies, and other organizations use them to finance operations, infrastructure, and expansion. In finance, analyzing debt instruments helps explain borrowing costs, portfolio returns, liquidity, default exposure, and the relationship between market interest rates and security values.
