Esophagram

An esophagram is a diagnostic imaging study that visualizes the esophagus and evaluates how safely and effectively it transports swallowed material. During the examination, a patient drinks a contrast agent, typically barium, while radiographs or fluoroscopy capture its movement through the esophagus; additional views may reveal changes in shape, narrowing, or passage. In medicine, esophagrams help investigate dysphagia, chest discomfort, reflux-related complications, strictures, rings, diverticula, leaks, and other structural abnormalities. The study can guide further testing and treatment by distinguishing mechanical obstruction from impaired swallowing function, while dynamic imaging may also assess aspiration risk.
