Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery is an approach that treats disease or repairs anatomical structures through small incisions or natural body openings rather than a large open incision. Surgeons use specialized instruments, cameras such as laparoscopes or endoscopes, and real-time imaging to view and manipulate internal tissues, often with carbon dioxide insufflation to create working space in the abdomen. The technique is used in procedures ranging from gallbladder removal to gynecologic, urologic, and cardiovascular interventions. By limiting tissue disruption, minimally invasive surgery can reduce postoperative pain, blood loss, scarring, and recovery time, while requiring advanced training and careful patient selection.

Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures rely on anatomical references to localize structures not directly visible to the surgeon. This manuscript describes a combined method of plane-by-plane dissection and sectional anatomy of fresh-frozen specimens to locate the structures at risk during MIS procedures.

This paper describes the design and fabrication of a soft unit for surgical manipulators. The base module includes three flexible fluidic actuators to achieve omnidirectional bending and elongation, and a granular jamming-based mechanism to enable stiffness control. A complete mechanical characterization is also reported.

Endoscopic septoplasty is a time-honored surgical procedure with multiple variations. This paper focuses on a step-by-step surgical approach to perform a modified septoplasty procedure known as limited two-line resection. This surgical technique can be applied to correct a deviated nasal septum in the absence of an external nasal deformity.
