Ureter Ligation Procedure

Ureter ligation is a surgical procedure that occludes a ureter, the tube carrying urine from a kidney to the bladder, and is used to control urinary flow or create a model of obstructive kidney injury. During the procedure, the ureter is isolated and closed with a ligature, preventing urine from passing downstream and producing increased upstream pressure and hydronephrosis. In medical research, this controlled obstruction helps investigators study renal inflammation, tubular injury, fibrosis, and changes in kidney function. In clinical surgery, ureteral ligation may also be used when deliberate ureteral closure is required, although its indication depends on the patient’s anatomy and treatment plan.

Ureters

The ureters are retroperitoneal tubes located on either side of the vertebral column. They are responsible for transporting urine from each kidney to the urinary bladder. These tubes have thick walls and are approximately 25-30 cm long. Their diameter is around 10 mm at the renal pelvis, gradually narrowing to 1 mm as the ureter obliquely enters the posterior bladder wall through the ureteric orifices. The shape of these orifices is slit-like, which helps to prevent urine backflow toward the...

Inducing rapid liver hypertrophy using Associating Liver Partition and Portal vein ligation for a Staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) has been proposed for resection of borderline resectable liver tumors. This model may elucidate mechanisms involved in rapid hypertrophy and allows testing of drugs that promote or block the acceleration of regeneration.

DNA Ligation Reactions

In molecular biology, ligation refers to the joining of two DNA fragments through the formation of a phosphodiester bond. An enzyme known as a ligase catalyzes the ligation reaction. In the cell, ligases repair single and double strand breaks that occur during DNA replication. In the laboratory, DNA ligase is used during molecular cloning to join DNA fragments of inserts with vectors – carrier DNA molecules that will replicate target fragments in host organisms. This video provides an...
