White-light Endoscopy

White-light endoscopy is a standard imaging technique that uses visible, broad-spectrum light to visualize the inner surfaces of hollow organs, making it central to diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. A flexible or rigid endoscope delivers illumination through optical fibers or an electronic light source, while lenses and a camera transmit or display reflected images of the mucosa in real time. Clinicians use these images to identify inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, polyps, tumors, and other abnormalities, guide targeted biopsies, and perform procedures such as lesion removal or hemostasis. Although newer imaging modes can enhance subtle features, white-light endoscopy remains the essential baseline for examination, screening, and follow-up.

White light microscope interferometry is an optical, noncontact and quick method for measuring the topography of surfaces. It is shown how the method can be applied toward mechanical wear analysis, where wear scars on tribological test samples are analyzed; and in materials science to determine ion beam sputtering or laser ablation volumes and depths.

Here we present methodology for the production of a focal stroke in murine white matter by local injection of an irreversible endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) inhibitor (L-Nio). Presented are two stereotactic variations, retrograde neuronal tracing, and fresh tissue labeling and dissection that expand the potential applications of this technique.
