Fetal Encephalopathy

Fetal encephalopathy is a broad term for abnormal brain development or neurological dysfunction affecting the fetus before birth, and it matters because early brain injury can influence survival and later neurodevelopment. Its mechanisms vary, but impaired oxygen or blood delivery can disrupt oxidative metabolism, reduce ATP production, and trigger excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and neuronal cell death; infection, inflammation, genetic conditions, and metabolic disturbances may also contribute. In neuroscience, clinicians and researchers use fetal imaging, prenatal monitoring, and molecular or clinical biomarkers to investigate these processes. This work supports earlier risk assessment, targeted perinatal care, and research into strategies that protect the developing brain.

The postnatal rat model for hypoxic-ischemic brain injury is a well-established model of human neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). In this article, we describe the model of HIE in post-natal rat pups.

A Novel Method to Model Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in Drosophila

Here, we describe a new approach to inflict closed-head traumatic brain injury in Drosophila melanogaster. Our method has the advantage of directly delivering repetitive impacts with adjustable strength to the head alone. Further exploration of the invertebrate system will help to illuminate the pathogenesis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

DefinitionHepatic encephalopathy is a reversible neurologic syndrome that results from advanced liver dysfunction or portosystemic shunting. It leads to disturbances in cognition, behavior, and motor function due to the brain’s exposure to gut-derived toxins that the liver fails to detoxify.EtiologyThis condition develops either in the setting of acute fulminant hepatitis or progressively during chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Portosystemic shunting—including...
