Gal80 Converting Tools

Gal80 converting tools are genetic methods that use the Gal80 repressor to refine or reconfigure Gal4-driven gene expression, an important strategy for selecting defined cell populations in neuroscience. Gal80 binds the activation domain of Gal4 and prevents Gal4 from activating upstream activating sequence reporters; controlling Gal80 expression or removal therefore determines where and when transgenes are expressed. These tools support intersectional labeling and manipulation of neuronal subsets, enabling researchers to distinguish overlapping genetic populations, map neural circuits, and test how selected neurons contribute to behavior and physiology.

Flyback Converter

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. A flyback converter is a buck-boost converter, which can both buck and boost. It has electrical isolation between the input and the output using a coupled inductor or a "flyback transformer." This coupled inductor enables a turns ratio that provides both voltage step-up and step-down capability, like in a regular transformer but with energy storage using the air-gap of the coupled inductor. The...

DC/DC Boost Converter

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Boost converters provide a versatile solution to stepping up DC voltages in many applications where a DC voltage needs to be increased without the need to convert it to AC, using a transformer, and then rectifying the transformer output. Boost converters are step-up converters that use an inductor as an energy storage device that supports the output with additional energy in addition to the DC input...

DC/DC Buck Converter

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. While it is simple to step up or down AC voltages and currents using transformers, stepping up or down DC voltages and currents in an efficient and regulated manner requires switching power converters. The DC/DC buck converter chops the input DC voltage using a series input switch, and the chopped voltage is filtered through the L-C low-pass filter to extract the average output voltage. The diode...

Antihypertensive Drugs: Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors

2024

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a vital component of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, is abundant in lung endothelial cells. ACE converts the inactive decapeptide, angiotensin I, into the active octapeptide, angiotensin II. This potent vasoconstrictor narrows blood vessels, increasing resistance to blood flow and elevating blood pressure. Angiotensin II also stimulates aldosterone production, encouraging kidney cells to reabsorb more sodium and water from urine, thereby increasing...

Citations play a key role in academic writing by documenting the evidence that supports scholarly claims. Beyond giving credit to original authors, they show engagement with existing research and strengthen the credibility of an argument. Effective citation practices are central to research literacy because they reflect a writer’s ability to locate, evaluate, and integrate reliable sources into their work. Digital Tools for Citation Management Advances in digital technology have simplified the...
