Cerebral Palsy Therapy

Cerebral palsy therapy comprises interventions that manage movement disorders, muscle stiffness, pain, and related functional limitations caused by early brain injury or abnormal brain development. In pharmacology, treatment works by modifying neural signaling or neuromuscular activity; medications may reduce excessive muscle tone through systemic action, targeted injection, or delivery into the spinal fluid. Pharmacological management is often combined with physical and occupational therapy to improve mobility, comfort, posture, and daily function. Selecting an appropriate drug, dose, route, and treatment schedule requires balancing therapeutic benefits with adverse effects, age, symptoms, and individual goals.

Several children with unilateral Cerebral Palsy seem to disregard the preserved capacity of their affected upper limb. This Developmental Disregard is extensively described in the literature but the involved cognitive processes have not been studied. To study underlying cognitive factors of upper limb control, an event-related potential protocol was developed.
