Extraintestinal Manifestations

Extraintestinal manifestations are systemic complications of gastrointestinal disease that affect organs and tissues outside the digestive tract, particularly in inflammatory bowel disease. They arise through immune dysregulation, shared inflammatory pathways, and altered gut-organ communication, producing conditions such as arthritis, skin lesions, eye inflammation, and hepatobiliary disease. In pharmacology, recognizing these manifestations helps clinicians select treatments that control intestinal inflammation while addressing associated organ involvement and avoiding medication-related harm. Their study also clarifies how biologic agents, immunomodulators, corticosteroids, and other therapies influence inflammation throughout the body, supporting more integrated disease management and improved patient outcomes.
