Food Aversion

Food aversion is a strong dislike or avoidance of particular foods, often triggered by their taste, smell, texture, appearance, or association with an unpleasant experience. In psychology, it commonly develops through conditioned taste aversion, when nausea or illness becomes linked to a food’s sensory cues, causing the person to avoid that food even after recovery. Food aversion can affect eating behavior, nutrition, social activities, and quality of life, and may occur alongside anxiety, gastrointestinal illness, sensory sensitivity, or disordered eating. Studying its cognitive and physiological mechanisms supports assessment and interventions that reduce distress while promoting adequate, flexible eating.

Conditioned taste aversion, also known as sauce béarnaise syndrome, is a phenomenon in which an individual develops an aversion to a certain food taste following a negative experience, typically illness. This form of aversion is a type of classical conditioning in which the taste of the food (conditioned stimulus, CS) is associated with the experience of illness (unconditioned stimulus, UCS). A notable characteristic of conditioned taste aversion is that it often requires only a single exposure...

Testing For Genetically Modified Foods

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Genetic modification of foods has been a controversial issue due to debated concerns over health and environmental safety. This experiment demonstrates technical understanding of how food DNA is genetically identified, allowing for educated decision making about the safety and potential dangers of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food supplies. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to amplify food DNA...
