Maternal Behavior Assessment

Maternal behavior assessment is the systematic study of how a mother responds to, cares for, and interacts with her infant or offspring, providing insight into caregiving, attachment, and family well-being. In psychology, researchers typically combine structured observations, behavioral coding, interviews, and questionnaires to document behaviors such as responsiveness, physical contact, communication, protection, and sensitivity to infant cues. These assessments help characterize typical and atypical caregiving patterns, evaluate how stress or other conditions influence parent–child interactions, and measure outcomes of parenting interventions. They also support research on early development, attachment processes, and the factors that shape children’s emotional and social adjustment.

Presented here is a video analysis pipeline that overcomes challenges in behavioral monitoring within MRI environments, allowing for the detection of uninstructed behavioral responses to external cues. This analysis will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of evoked internal state changes and brain-wide activity.
