X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a non-destructive surface analytical technique that measures elemental composition, chemical state, and electronic state of materials within the top 10 nanometers. X-rays strike atoms, ejecting core shell electrons whose kinetic energies are measured. By calculating binding energies from these measurements, researchers determine the material's surface chemistry and composition.

When a core shell electron absorbs a highly energetic X-ray photon, it gains enough energy to escape its orbit as a photoelectron.
