Question 1

What is the role of tissue induction in organ development?

Accepted Answer

Tissue induction is a process where an inducer tissue produces signals that alter the behavior and determine the fate of a responder tissue. During organogenesis, each cell type functions as either an inducer or responder based on gene expression patterns. The responder tissue must express appropriate cell surface proteins to receive and interpret signals from the inducer, enabling proper organ formation.

Question 2

How do transplantation studies investigate cellular interactions during development?

Accepted Answer

Transplantation studies involve excising embryonic tissue from a donor and grafting it into a host embryo during early development. By observing how transplanted tissue develops in different host environments, researchers can determine how altering cellular signals changes tissue fate. This technique reveals how gene expression and molecular pathways control developmental decisions.

Question 3

What tools and preparations are needed to perform transplantation procedures?

Accepted Answer

Microscopic surgical techniques require specialized tools including tungsten needles flame-polished to sharp points or fine glass needles pulled from capillary tubes. Depending on the organism, a stabilization mold may be necessary to steady the embryo during the procedure. These preparations enable precise dissection and transplantation of embryonic tissues under a dissecting microscope.

Question 4

What is the quail-chick system and why is it used in transplantation studies?

Accepted Answer

The quail-chick system is a model organism approach that exploits structural differences between quail and chick embryos to track transplanted tissues. Researchers can transplant specific cell populations, such as neural crest cells, from quail into duck embryos and identify quail-derived contributions in the developed organism due to genetic differences. This system enables assessment of species-specific patterning and cell fate determination.

Question 5

How can transplantation studies identify genes that control tissue fate?

Accepted Answer

Researchers transplant a layer of stem cells called the animal cap expressing a gene of interest onto the flank of a host embryo. If an eye-like structure develops at the transplantation site, the gene directs stem cells toward a specific tissue fate, such as retinal cells. This approach demonstrates how individual genes influence developmental decisions and cellular differentiation.

Question 6

What does the Hensen's node experiment reveal about cell-cell interactions?

Accepted Answer

The Hensen's node, also called the organizer or primitive knot, is excised from a donor chick embryo and transplanted to a naive region on a host embryo. The transplanted Hensen's node forms a miniature notochord, demonstrating that signals from donor tissue guide host tissue toward a neural fate. This experiment shows how cell-cell interactions direct developmental patterning.

Question 7

What histological techniques are used to analyze transplanted tissues after development?

Accepted Answer

After transplanted embryos develop to the desired age, tissue induction is studied using various histological and microscopic techniques. These methods allow researchers to examine the structure and composition of both donor and host tissues at the transplantation site. Such analysis reveals how transplanted tissue influenced host development and whether the intended fate change occurred.
