Question 1

What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?

Accepted Answer

Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells from one parent cell and maintains the chromosome number, supporting growth and tissue maintenance in multicellular organisms. Meiosis involves one DNA replication but two rounds of cell division, halving the chromosome number to produce gametes like sperm and eggs. Both processes are essential for different biological functions.

Question 2

How do scientists determine which phase of the cell cycle a cell is in?

Accepted Answer

Scientists use cell cycle analysis with special dyes like bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), which incorporates into newly synthesized DNA during S phase, and propidium iodide (PI), which stains all DNA. Flow cytometry then analyzes the stained cells, revealing the distribution of cells across different cell cycle phases based on DNA content and fluorescence intensity.

Question 3

What role do cyclins and cdc genes play in controlling the cell cycle?

Accepted Answer

Cyclins are proteins that oscillate in abundance during cell cycle phases and act as key regulators. CDC genes, particularly cdc2, guide cells through cell cycle stages and are highly conserved between yeast and humans. Together, these molecules form biochemical switches that activate or deactivate cell cycle processes, controlling progression through division.

Question 4

How can mutations in oncogenes lead to cancer?

Accepted Answer

Mutations in oncogenes disrupt normal cell cycle regulation, causing increased cell proliferation. This abnormal division leads to uncontrolled cell growth characteristic of cancer. Scientists continue investigating tumor-causing factors and proteins involved in tumor progression to better understand how these genetic changes initiate and advance malignant disease.

Question 5

What are quantifiable tracking dyes and how do they measure cell division?

Accepted Answer

Quantifiable tracking dyes label cell membranes and generate fluorescent signals that become dimmer as they dilute through successive cell divisions. By measuring the difference between highest and lowest fluorescence intensity, researchers can determine how many times specific cells divided within a mixed population, enabling comparison of proliferation rates between different cell types.

Question 6

How do external chemical signals influence cell division?

Accepted Answer

Cells respond to external chemical cues called mitogens that stimulate or inhibit cell division. Scientists are investigating which extracellular factors trigger increased proliferation and which ones suppress it. Understanding these signaling pathways is critical for comprehending how disruption of normal cell division control can initiate pathological processes like cancer.

Question 7

What imaging techniques allow direct observation of living cells during division?

Accepted Answer

Time-lapse microscopy enables direct observation of live cells dividing. Scientists stain cells using fluorescein dyes or genetically manipulate them to express fluorescent proteins, then capture sequential images over time. This advanced imaging approach reveals the dynamic processes of cell division in real time, complementing traditional cell cycle analysis methods.
