Het protocol beschrijft een nieuw in vivo muismodel van spinale implantaatinfectie waarbij een roestvrijstalen k-draadimplantaat is geïnfecteerd met bioluminescente Staphylococcus aureus Xen36. De bacteriële belasting wordt longitudinaal gemonitord met bioluminescente beeldvorming en bevestigd met kolonievormende eenheidstellingen na euthanasie.

Periprothetische gewrichtsinfectie (PJI) veroorzaakt door gevaarlijke ziekteverwekkers komt vaak voor in de klinische orthopedie. Bestaande diermodellen kunnen de werkelijke situatie van PJI niet nauwkeurig simuleren.
